Garba : Recreation for many, while remedy for some
*A Bank employee Maya Shah, 32, patient of insomnia and depression, has been prescribed by his shrink to go out and play Garba everyday for at least one hour. *Kavya, 10, student, patient of dysthymia (type of depression) has been prescribed to participate in Garba till Sharad Poonam with her parents. Her therapist has asked her to sing aarti and play Garba at least for half-an-other each day.
Dance gracefully with vigour as it can save you from severe depression, insomnia, dysthymia and keep you healthy, say health experts. The vibrant and charged festival atmosphere may help many to refresh, relax and recreate. For some, it is a remedy – a prescribed medication.
Dr. Param Shukla, adolescent psycho-therapist, who handled Kavya’s case said, “This patient is under severe depression and has stopped interacting with friends and resists going to school. As Navratri festivals were just round the corner when I got her case, I prescribed her a simple routine for first 15-days to go out and sing aarti and play Garba only for half-an-hour.”
And as expected by the therapist, he has already heard from the kid’s mother that Kavya is doing better – only after doing Garba few days. “She resisted a lot on the first day when we took her out for a Garba stage-show and we barely sat there for half-an-hour after the aarti,” said Kavya’s mom. “However, things have changed within last two days,” said Shukla. “Now she is getting interested in dressing up and did Garba for an hour yesterday,” admits her mom.
Similarly improvement is noticed in case of Maya, whose case is handled by consulting psychiatrist Dr. Prashant Bhimani. “Due to marital problems, this patient is suffering insomnia and depression. With, medication and counselling, I have added Garba Hour in her therapeutic routine. Outings, watching vibrant dance movements, colourful costumes and playful musical melodies – is the perfect mixture that can certainly help one to beat depression,” he said.
Doing a few rounds of Garba is an ideal remedy that is often added in the prescriptions for the patients of insomnia, dysthymia, depression, anxiety, stress and fatigue, agree other psycho-therapists. Dr. Vinod Goyal, one of the most leading psycho-therapists in city associated with corporate hospitals, said, “Prescribing Garba patients of insomnia, depression and dysthymia brings the similar overall improvement as an hour of physiotherapy brings in condition of an arthritis patient.”
