Many come to Gujarat seeking teetotaller grooms, undergo tough trials
Classic Match marriage bureau in city has received about 200 applications from NRG girls prior to this marriage season and 50 % of these girls want vegetarian teetotaller grooms.
Falguni Mehta marriage bureau in Mumbai which specialises on NRG weddings has got about 350 applications from NRG girls and 60 % of them prefer vegetarian and teetotaller grooms.
The typical matrimonial offer looking for such grooms reads like this. Cultured, educated Gujarati Jain family seeks alliance for their daughter (1985 born, 5 feet 7.5 inch tall) currently working in Germany. She is liberal but is also grounded to her roots. She is looking for an educated, cultured, suitable and preferably vegetarian and non-smoker who can be a great companion throughout her life.
The NRGs are all over the marriage bureaus looking for teetotaller grooms for their foreign bred daughter. Ironically, as the local youth too get influenced by western culture, good boys who do not drink, smoke and eat non-vegetarian food are increasingly difficult to find!
The NRG wedding specialists say that in fresh reversal of gender roles, now, NRG brides settled abroad come home to finding a teetotaller grooms. And many are hopeful that they may find this type of suitors at least in their dry Gujarat!
“The thirst of interest is in finding a ‘conventionally ideal’ teetotaller partner who does not mind migrating as a dependent spouse,” says Falguni Mehta, NRG matrimonial specialist working in the field since last 25 years.
“My daughter, currently working at a reputed 5-star resort in Australia, seeks a vegetarian partner,” said Jaya Mehta native of Gondal who is on a look out for son-in-law for management professional Rajshree Mehta, holding Australian residency. Mehta duo firmly believes that they can find an ideal match in the state and are planning a 2-month trip to Gujarat to meet few candidates selected on-line.
Kavita Shah, businessman’s daughter running a family business in the UK wants to settle down with a like minded family from Gujarat. “And many Gujarati businessmen like Shah come looking for teetotaller grooms of who do not mind moving out of country,” said Shila Dave, mach maker handling NRG queries.
Many of these proposals for well settled daughters attract prospective grooms from the state. “However, if the bride is too particular into finding teetotaller mates, they often find it hard into getting a match of their standard. Later, they compromise on candidate who indulges into social drinking; but seldom compromise on habit of smoking or eating non-veg,” informs Dave.
NRGs who have preserved tight norms of no-smoking and no-drinking at homes abroad naively believe that they would surely get a customarily ideal teetotaller grooms back home but only few fortunately actually manage to teetotaller types.
“We are could finalise to meet only two candidates from 150 odd offers we received from various matrimonial agents from Gujarat. In many cases we cancelled to probe further as we found that the candidate is not a teetotaller,” said a doctor couple settled in New York currently sorting out proposals for their doctorate daughter.
