Highlighting the donor family on occasion of World Blood Donor Day June 14
Five member Golavia family from Surat has donated blood 141 times and plans to carry on the tradition.
Gujarat is the only state in the country that is home to 99 centurion blood donors. However, besides this honour, the state is a home to a unique family which has an identity that beats the honour of being a centurion blood donor. This family of five has till now donated blood 141 times and still is on the way to donate more.
Known, as family of donors in Surat, Bharat Golavia, 47, a social worker who is promoting blood donation and organ donation activities and his family inaugurated 40 blood donation camps within last three months. Golavia, who began donating blood at the age of 25 donated blood for 75 times till this May. His wife Sharda Glavia, 45 has donated 18 times. His three children have also joined the cause.
His eldest daughter Dr. Sanskruti Gloavia, 22, who began donating blood as she turned 18, has done the donation 18 times till this month. Surbhi Golavia, 19, computer engineer, has just joined their family cause by celebrating her 18th birthday at blood bank and has donated blood four times within this year. Son of Golavia family, Vijay, 29, who again joined the blood donation cause at the age of 18, has donated blood 26 times till now. This family is registered as regular donors with Surat’s Lok Samarpan Raktdan Kendra – an NGO promoting blood donation movement in Gujarat, only state in country having 99 centurion blood donors.
Golavia, said, “We donated blood four or three times in a year to promote this cause.” Golavias are known as a family of blood donors who are invited at various blood donation camps and social functions clubbed with blood donation promotion activities to mark the beginnings.
Dr. Sanskruti Golavia said, “Donating blood is the cause of our family which has almost become our identity. It boosts us to stay fit as we are firmly determined to keep donating blood at least three times a year. Donating blood has made one more responsible for maintaining my health as I work harder to maintain my haemoglobin levels so that I do not miss my chance of making a donation.” Golavia family is linked with Rotary Club of Surat and Lok Drashti Chokshu Bank for promotion of blood donation activities.
