Noted names from Gujarat’s art and music fraternity from town went to Mumbai to pay their last respects to ghazal legend Jagjit Singh at his funeral held on Tuesday.
And somber mood continued in the city as many of the citizens silently prayed for the artist from their homes. Noted poet Tushar Shukla, musicians Saumil and Shyamal Munshi, Ankit Trivedi, Parthiv Gohil and Bharat Pathak attended the funeral on Tuesday.
For the duo Saumil and Shyamal Munshi, for whose music album Hastakshar Jagjitji sung title tune (Antar na pane…) in 2001, demise of Jagjitji was a personal loss. “It is also a devastating loss to global music fraternity,” said Saumil Munshi.
“While he lent his voice for Hastakshar, we got a sneak peek into the humane side of this legendary artist which turned respect we have for him into deep love,” said Shyamal.
Champak Shah, 70, a retired mill technician and a diehard fan of the singer who privately prayed for his peace, said, “I have been attending Jagjitji’s programs since early 1970. During 70s and 80s when he performed with music organization Shruti, he came to perform in the city almost every month. His demise is a huge personal loss to millions of his fans who could appreciate and understand ghazals just because he sang them.”
